The films focus on the Garrity family. The first part tells the story of a huge comet shower threatening Earth. The father of the family, played by Butler, tries to find a safe haven together with his wife Allison and son Nathan. After the events of the first film, the Garrity family leaves Greenland and embarks on a journey through the wasteland of Europe to find a new home.
