1307, the Holy Roman Empire is in turmoil. Switzerland is oppressed by the Habsburgs and its citizens suffer under merciless tax collectors. When a peasant takes revenge on a Habsburg, he finds an ally in William Tell. The conflict escalates when the Austrian bailiff Gessler orders Tell to shoot an apple off his son's head. Tell joins the resistance and becomes the leader of the fight for Swiss independence.
