The Hypocrites (Die Scheinheiligen)
Based on true events from the records of Fischingen Monastery
In 1961, young Clara is sent to a remote Catholic boarding school run by strict members of a religious order. But Clara, a brave and unbreakable child, resists the threats and abuse suffered by her and her classmates. While most of the children are broken, Clara remains steadfast and begins to plan her escape. Her courage inspires others to stand up as well.
Eventually, she manages to flee the monastery and becomes a symbol of hope and resistance against oppression and violence. Clara's story shows that even in the darkest times, hope and courage can prevail. In other words: SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION in a convent. Hope and courage triumph over brute power and violence.
The Hypocrites (Die Scheinheiligen) is based on numerous incidents that occurred at the St. Iddazell children’s home, part of the Fischingen Monastery in eastern Switzerland. For many years, children there were victims of physical and sexual abuse. Behind the monastery walls, abuse, sadism, and a severe lack of oversight prevailed, leading to long-lasting suffering.
